Some guy who looks like I might look thinking about this, because I love chin stroking

After my epic exchange with MRA queen Karen Straughan in a YouTube comment section, I contemplated it. It’s not every day that I encounter someone who thinks very differently to how I do, and expresses those divergent thoughts at some length.

So what do I think of Karen Straughan’s views in the exchange I had with her, in retrospect? I can’t say I’m impressed.

I started out telling her she would end up realizing she should have been far more skeptical of Trump and his supporters’ claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, because they’re false claims. I…

This lady again, because I had an epic exchange with her on YouTube

I’m always intrigued by people who are clearly intelligent but seem to use their intelligence in service of some point of view I wholeheartedly disagree with. I wouldn’t quite categorize Karen Straughan this way, at least not with regard to her critique of feminism (I agree with some of it), but her recent YouTube post that I would call “20 Points in Favour of Donald Trump” contained at least a few entries I found to be particularly wrongheaded.

Unsurprisingly, one of the entries I disagreed with related to Trump’s claims of voter fraud, which I’ve viewed as bogus from the…

Rudy Giuliani spreads Trump’s propaganda, like a good lackey

Many people have poor bullshit detectors. It’s one of the key reasons why America’s democracy appears so fragile. If people can’t tell fact from fiction, they can’t be informed enough to make wise decisions about who should represent them democratically. This is why critical thinking should be a core aspect of both primary and secondary education. Alas, it isn’t.

An important aspect of critical thinking is understanding some principles that can help to instinctively detect bullshit, even without a grasp of the finer details of a particular issue. This is crucial, because no one has the time to thoroughly inspect…

Karen Straughan, leading MRA and apparent Trump supporter

Karen Straughan is a leading voice in the MRA (“Men’s Right Activism”) world. In fact, some may view her as the leading voice in the movement, although she doesn’t appear as active on social media as she once was. She is a unique thinker, in that she might be the “steelman” of the MRA world. That is, if you’re looking for the strongest arguments in favour of the MRA perspective, she is the best single person from whom you might hear those arguments.

None of this is meant as an endorsement of Straughan’s worldview. But the strength of her intellect…

It might be fun, but don’t do this to your Republican friend

Jessica Valenti today writes “It’s OK to be a Sore Winner”, in reference to celebrating Joe Biden defeating Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. In her article, she makes several points in support of her position, including how an election is not like winning a sporting match, that Donald Trump is an awful person, that civility can actually be counter-productive, and that we should enjoy the moment.

Valenti anticipates the counter-argument that this kind of behaviour would increase polarization, but dismisses it by saying it “won’t hurt the country”. …

Map of 2020 US election before Georgia, Alaska, and North Carolina were called

Yesterday, four days after polls closed, various press outlets called the 2020 US presidential election in favour of Joe Biden. Democrat supporters took to the streets to celebrate. Donald Trump has yet to concede, but that’s just sour grapes. It’s clear now: Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States. But is it really over?

Donald Trump’s presidency has been surreal. A man who so many saw as unfit to be president of the United States, let alone president of your local tennis club, somehow did become the US president. …
